Dealing with many different tasks and priorities at one time is something that most of us in this world must go through at all different stages in life. Whether it be kids at school balancing homework and playing with friends or parents who have kids to care for and bills to pay, it can feel very daunting for many of us no matter what the scenario. As the priorities in your life increase and become more major, balancing them can change from feeling daunting to just downright impossible.
I have also gone through different stages in life with varying degrees of priorities to try and balance, but I am having more of a struggle at trying to deal with many different priorities and balancing them effectively more recently. With many different tasks on my plate, it can be tough to achieve everything I want to by the end of the day, and I am sure a few of you reading this may be feeling or have felt a similar way. By better balancing our priorities, we can lead a better life by having a good work-life balance and getting the things we want done at work as well as at home.
So, what can we do to help ourselves when it comes to balancing our priorities? Some of the things I have been focusing on in my ongoing battle to continue improving have been flexibility, patience, planning, and strategic thinking. Let me elaborate on a couple of these points.
It is important to be flexible because priorities can be constantly shifting. Sometimes unexpected things happen at home or at work and can completely change our list of priorities. Sometimes current priorities can change and become more major halfway through the day compared to how they were at the start. It can really drag us down for the day and result in not getting much done if we get too thrown off by sudden changes in events and priorities. Being flexible and adapting to shifting priorities can help reduce stress and help us be more successful.
Planning is another tactic that I really try to focus on. There are many different planning methods out there, but here I will introduce some of the methods I have implemented for myself and have had success with. The first thing is setting goals for the day. Here at Agfinity we all set our goals at the start of each day, whether that be behavioral KPIs or actual stats we want to achieve. Setting daily goals is a great start, but I sometimes like to set even smaller goals or steps that could help me achieve those bigger goals that I wanted to by the end of the day. Blocking time in your calendar is another great method to keep your priorities on track through planning. This isn’t quite as important in my personal life, but I’ve found it to be essential when it comes to my work life. I block time for everything from meetings to achieving goals for the day and usually everything else in between. It may seem like a bit much to some, but it really can be effective when done and utilized properly.
Hopefully some of these methods can help you in better balancing your priorities and as a result maybe relieve some stress, and help you succeed in the goals you are setting yourself.

As the “Battle of Alberta” continues in hockey so does seeding in Alberta. Planting progress is about 50% complete as of a week ago. In speaking to one of the elevators up by Grande Prairie, it sounds like seeding is taking longer to get going, they are about 15% complete. New Crop continues to be slow to come to the market.
Last week we saw Barley demand come up. We were hearing that some feedlots that were on Corn were changing to Barley for the summer and were starting to talk New Crop. We continue to see strong bids for Barley this week with Old Crop at approximately $460/mt delivered Lethbridge for May-July. For New Crop today we are hearing potentials of $435-$450/mt delivered Lethbridge Sept-Nov.
We saw a rally in Wheat prices early last week, no surprise after India announced that they were not going to export any wheat. The markets seem to have dropped so far this week. As of yesterday, we were getting bids still as high as $585/mt delivered Edmonton area for Feed Wheat.
Canola has been down, even as of this morning. It’s getting harder and harder to get strong bids for June/July deliveries as crush plants are full. The northern regions have been slow in planting—less than 5% Canola crop in the ground. Let’s see how the next few weeks pan out with the weather and seeding to see if prices end up going up again, along with other worldly impacts.
